CCC 2258 The Fifth Commandment ➔

affirms that human life is a sacred gift, protected from conception to natural death. It forbids murder, abortion, euthanasia, suicide, and indirect killing, while also condemning murderous anger and hatred (Mt 5:21‑22). Self‑defence and, in rare cases, a just war are permitted when proportionate and necessary. Pope Francis, in his 2025 Angelus, warns that “culture of death” endangers the weak. Thus the commandment calls us to protect the unborn, the sick, and the dying, promoting health and dignity for all.
